The Global Food Summit will again participate in the Berlin Science Week in 2023. We are pleased to present two sessions on 4.11. 2022 in the morning from 9:30 to 11:00 in the Deep Dive Forum room at the Natural History Museum in Berlin - i.e. right in the heart of Science Week.
The event will kick off from 9:30 to 11:00 a.m. with the presentation "Water, a neglected resource" from the Department of Economic and Infrastructure Policy (WIP) at the Technical University of Berlin with Greta Sundermann, Gero Scheck and Christian von Hirschhausen.
Here, research results from DIW Berlin and the Technical University of Berlin will be presented, offering input to the German government's National Water Strategy.
Innovative examples of water management in food and agriculture, for example through "Environment Controlled Agriculture" will be presented in this session by Stephan Becker-Sonnenschein from the Global Food Summit.
The second session, from 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., is titled "The Future is in Africa" and sheds light on a battlefield of hopes and fears, competing interests and expectations. Highlights from joint research projects between the University of Bonn and African partners will be presented.
Below you will find details about our events and how you can participate. We look forward to seeing you there!
OUR PROGRAM
GLOBAL FOOD SUMMIT – WATER. A NEGLECTED RESOURCE.
FRI | NOV 04, 2022 | 09.30 AM - 11.00 AM BERLIN TIME
TECHNISCHE UNIVERSITÄT BERLIN GRETA SUNDERMANN, GERO SCHECK, CHRISTIAN VON HIRSCHHAUSEN
Input on the German government's National Water Strategy
From the Tesla factory in Grünheide just outside Berlin to drought-threatened regions of the global South, water scarcity is an increasingly local and global socio-technical problem, exacerbated by the man-made climate crisis. This presentation summarizes recent research findings from several papers and places them in the context of current trends in water and environmental economics. In doing so, this also provides input to the German government's National Water Strategy, which envisions an action program of measures to be taken by 2030 to address the generational challenge of water.
GLOBAL FOOD SUMMIT | STEPHAN BECKER-SONNENSCHEIN
Benjamin Franklin's saying "When the well runs dry, we recognize the value of water" aptly describes our first topic. After the dry summer, which has again led to crop losses due to drought in some areas, a simple "business as usual" in water and agriculture is not possible.
Some innovative methods from precision farming, from "Environment Controlled Agriculture" or even sustainable sanitary material flows show ways how water can be saved.

THE FUTURE LIES IN AFRICA
FRI | NOV 04, 2022 | 11.30 AM - 13.00 AM BERLIN TIME
UNIVERSITY OF BONN | LISA BIBER-FREUDENBERGER, VINCENT MOSETI, JULIET WANJIKU KAMAU, GABIN KOUÉVI ANANOU, DETLEF MÜLLER-MAHN
The future is a battlefield of hopes and fears, competing interests and expectations.
Confronted by multiple overlapping crises, we have to acknowledge that the future cannot be taken for granted, and that it may even come as a complete surprise.
Living with uncertainty is a common experience in large parts of the African continent, where climate change, rapid social transformation, and economic disruptions present major challenges for future-making. The session presents some highlights of joint research projects in collaboration between the university of Bonn and African partners.
It addresses the following questions: How do African futures become accessible in collaborative scientific research? What characterizes the possibilities and probabilities of African futures? What can we learn from African experiences in regard to future-making practices?
